Spellbound
I had just finished reading an Elton John biography, and thought it would be fun to challenge myself to set a poem to music, like Elton typically does with Bernie Taupin's lyrics. I was in the mood to write about winter again, so I searched for some simple poems on the subject, and came across Emily Brontë's "Spellbound".
I felt an instant connection with the idea of being so captivated by the power of a winter storm that you can't look away -- even if you're standing in the middle of it. Of course there are likely more layers to what the poem is really about, but I used the idea of a swirling snow storm as a jumping-off point, and had a great time coming up with the music. It's become one of my students' favorite pieces of mine.
